I answered my own question...

If you have too many phone numbers, the ULF address book transfer works just fine. It just quits receiving (not sure the pattern) some of the phone numbers from the Blackberry.

My dropped connection problem was caused by having bad data in the phone number fields. I had alpha characters and other junk in my phone number fields, since I imported the contact database from my Palm. The Blackberry worked great after I did a laborious contact database cleanup.
