There are quite a few phones that work with the BMW BT system but don't support the automatic phonebook transfer capability. It sounds to me like your phone may be one of those.

You could consider adding phonebook entries via the voice module (may be a separate component you have to add). The downside to this is you are then maintaining separate phonebooks (one in the phone and one in the vehicle).
