OMG I found the cause! After reading this thread, I looked for the plastic stopper piece next to the lift gate latch. Well there is no stopper. In a quick-fix I just did the ghetto thing and folded up some newspaper, sandwiched it between the lift/tail gates....voila...noise gone! So now I just have to find something more permanent I guess.
