Only difference is having an amp and not having an amp. Unless you get a classical acoustic, finger patterns and strumming will be the same. That's based on my experience with guitar and bass.
As for cranking out easy tunes, Sabbath is one of the best bets... straight simple power chords. If you're interested in other songs, or different music, figure out the key/scale/chord progression being used (it's easier than it sounds), and play rythmn with just complete chords and strumming.
A must learn for all guitarists is Smoke On the Water, Wish You Were Here, Pride and Joy, Stairway, Iron Man or Paranoid... at least all the guitartists I know, known them.
