I've got to agree with Eric. After having two back surgery's, I have gotten a good Chiropractor, go to water aerobics 3 times a week, and have been involved with pilates for a year. My second back surgery was three years ago. Stretching and exercises for my back have become a daily routine.
I probably wouldn't have needed the second back surgery, but doctors only fix the problem, they don't make good recommendations on how to avoid future problems. I might also suggest taking a tennis ball and rolling it against your back on a wall. Back problems are caused by muscles that are tight and are pulling on your spine. The spinal problems don't just happen by themselves. Just my 2 cents.....whatever works for ya'!
