I did just as you suggested and burned a data CD instead of an MP3 CD and it still plays static. I'm bummed about it. Is static what is normally played when it is not capable of reading MP3 or is that some sort of error. I am puzzled as to why it wont play a burned disc with wav on it all the way through.

Is there anything else I can try...I guess it is time to buy a DICE for my 60GB.

I still like the idea of having 6 CDs full of MP3s in my trunk...

The X5 became compatible with MP3-technology in 10/05, if your X5 was built on 5/05 - it's not compatible with MP3 discs. BMW started offering the MP3 changers approximately 2/06-on. Unless you've specifically purchased the MP3 changer - your current unit is not compatible.

While an MP3 compatible CD Changer can be installed, you will need the a new radio tuner also to see text display from your MP3 discs. While this is a costly option, text display can also be found on the DICE iPod kit.
