CJ,
It's an old scam.. New Yorkers such as myself have been familiar with this type of going on for years.
- sometimes the stereo's fell off of the back of a truck !
- sometimes they show you a model and sell you a sealed box that has nothing but a brick in it.
- sometimes you get the cash, they meet you in an alley, beat the crap out of you and take your cash..
- as you already know. The saying goes "If it looks to good to be true, it probably is."
Your smart about not entertaining the idea of buying the stuff.
8 years ago when I was living in Manhattan, I had a friend who I thought was pretty street wise. One night we were coming out of a bar and a homeless guy was carrying a box for a brand new video camera, sealed and everything. He was trying to sell it for $150 and my friend took the bait despite 3 of us strongly urging him to walk away. My friend got the cash and did the exchange. Upon trying to open it, it became obvious this was not a factory seal. He ripped the box open and found a nice red brick where a camera should have been. He went running after the homeless guy (we did not follow) again urging him to let it go.
- when my friend caught up to the homeless guy they had a scirmage that ended with the homeless guy pulling out some sort of homemade shank and trying to stab my friend.
- My friend wanted to know why we didn't follow and try to help. I told him he should not have bought the box and furthermore, he shouldn't have gone running after some fucked up crack head. He had the nerve to be mad at us.
- Well, I don't speak to that friend anymore, mostly because he was a stupid coke head and often put us in postions that could lead into trouble.
Moral of the story, don't hang out with coke heads and don't buy electronics off the street. And, if you have a friend(s) that you feel don't use good judgement and can put you in a position to find yourself compromised or possibly getting beat up, arrested, etc. LOSE THOSE FRIENDS.. Life is too short.
