It could be linked to key settings. My wife had both mirrors dipping at one point. I would get in and nothing happened. Then I tried opening the X with her key and, sure enough, both mirrors dipped. Took it to the dealer for something else and happened to mention this and they reprogrammed the memory module. That's when we lost the automatic retract of the steering column. (Another story for another day.)
