here is how it is going to be fixed and done in the end IMO.
The companies that get hacked or have their information stolen are going to be HEAVILY penalized by the government for not protecting customer data. For every customer information stolen, set a fine of say $11,000 ...kind of like what the FTC has for the do not call list.
