The companies that get hacked or have their information stolen are going to be HEAVILY penalized by the government for not protecting customer data. For every customer information stolen, set a fine of say $11,000 ...kind of like what the FTC has for the do not call list.

I'm a tad more Draconian, but I think they oughta give the punqeazz grifters a "fair and speedy" trial and hang 'em high on national pay TV, every Fri eve: child molesters, murderers, id thieves, terrorists, et al. But, maybe that's jes'me...
By the time the polits have hearings, get lobbied, fiddle w/their pencils, get pressured by their CC constiuents, it will be a 10 volume load of bs that does/did nothing to "cure/resolve" a situ that really cannot be corraled or subdued, imo.
In my situ, all the info they have "as me" is pretty readily available/findable, even by a non-'puter lit ol'jerk like me...the thing that pizzes me off is my and my wife's SS#s, which is the ID equiv. of the Stairway to Heaven. Those numbers were not given out most of the time, even when the idiots like the elec. utility co. wanted them. By the bye, to get a phone line or to have a phone line Disconnected, any phone co. sez that the FCC
requires the customer's SS#. Change the fooking rules... BR,md
PS/Edit: I realize the latest MC fiasco supposedly did Not reveal SS#s...I wasn't railing at MC; I am railing at the "system" that allows that used-to-be sacred # from being obviously, procurable by the fooking bad guys.
