I did have to bend up some device which was on a bracket behind the lining so the sub could slide into place.

You realize this is the locking mechanism for the gas fill door?? You might want to check to see that it is still operating properly. I am in the process of building my own sub box for this space and that is one of the obstacles I have had to work around.
