540 Starting Problems

Ok I have a question on our quite old and fading '94 540i. The battery is most certainly dead as a door nail. I tried jumping it, and the engine would try to crank but would just never turn over. I had my bro rev his engine, then tried again,...same thing. Is it possible that the battery is so dead that a jump just isnt going to do anything? Or are we possible looking at a larger problem here?

I know I should be asking this on bimmerforums.com but I just trust y'all opions more. Any ideas greatly appreciated. Thanks!!
