I haven't heard anything either - pure speculation, but consider BMW's past practices: The 3 Series coupe is the first to get the 3.5. Now the sedan has it. The 3 Sedan started with as a 328xi, now we're told the 3.5L will be available as a 335xi. It doesn't make sense that this motor won't carry over to the 530xi (making it a 535xi) as well as the X5. I guess time will tell.
On a related note, I'm still trying to understand why the 4.8L engine is in the X5 instead of the more powerful 5L engine from the 5 Series.
My guess is we will see a changeover to the 3.5L and the 5L (or whatever their actual displacements are) in the next year.
As for why would you want a turbo in an SUV? Firstly it's an SAV, which means it's not meant for off road use, so why not? What is the negative to a turbo in this vehicle that isn't a negative to it in the 3 series (335xi)? It is supposed to have good low end torque and plenty of HP (30 more than the 3.0, right?). I'm thinking it would be a good move, don't you?
