Cable TV providers make a TON of money, as does Verizon. Verizon is basically running fiber optic cable in parallel to their copper AND running the Fiber to every house. Considering the age of a majority of the copper wiring that is currently in place, Verizon probably had the fiber replacement plan in the works for a very long time and was just waiting for it to be cost effective to implement. Cablevision has been laying fiber in the NY/NJ/CT areas for years and is just now getting the digital service rolled out on it.
