The problem with NJ is that if I am not mistaken it has the highest property taxes per capita in the enitre United States, something like $1,600 per capita when the average is just above $700; not to mention that you have to pay $6 everytime you want to cross to NY. unless you work in NJ it makes no sense to move to NJ, also there are alot of stinky swamps.

I don't think he's ready to buy now or he would have mentioned it, perhaps he wants to get to know the city narrow it down to one place where he wants to buy then pull the trigger. I do agree that rents in the city are extremely high but hey it's NY, bang for you buck as far as rentals everyone in real estate knows that you will get the best apartments in Inwood (uptown Manhattan) huge apartments for $1000 - $1500 and it's one of NYC's best kept secrets.
