after washing with Dawn, you should always wash with a car specific car wash soap like Meguiars to get the dawn off, because the dawn will dry out the plastic/rubber parts, not to mention it can leave a residue which should be removed prior to any polish or wax being applied.

BTW- a porter-cable orbital will alleviate that painful wrist
