The 3.0 is a sweet engine but suits lighter weighted BMWs. The more you push it for performance the more it drinks and does'nt put out. Torque is the key to SUV happiness if your need is for quick response around town and on the open road. The 4.4 and 4.8 are best suited for the X5 but come at a premium. The diesel engine sits in the middle and is my personal choice for economy and performance and as with all engines with turbo charging, if you want to stoke the fire it wont cost a bomb of cash. Do your self a favor and take a test drive.
