If you went speaker level --> to Line level RCA, did you use a line out converter? I don't think it is required in most cases with this amp (rare), but sounds like in your case it is. Change the input voltage switch, and see if it helps and get an LOC to cut the voltage down if that is still needed. Your description of the behavior sounds like you may be overdriving the input. An LOC is not expensive and just take a minute to install.

There is no volume control or gain on this amp, it is a sensitivity control which requires the adjustment noted near the end of the manual. The sub is 4 ohms. If you wired it straight to the amp that is 4 Ohm load.
