I wouldn't think the heat from the heater vents could get hot enough fast enough to cause temperature change in the wood as much as to crack it.....interesting though.

Yea, I don't know its the only thing that I could think of, I went to the gym and when I got back in there was a crack, no one could have used it. Also a similar thing happened to my windshield, I had a deep rock chip and the first time it was really cold out there was a long crack coming from the chip...maybe my X5 is prone to cracks...I've had similar cracks in my wood trim on the driver's door and a couple on the console but they were there when I purchased it. Oh well maybe I'll get new trim... or nav.
