For what it's worth:

I live in the suburban DC area. My wife and I have been trying to buy one since late December and finally ordered one yesterday at $2K off list. The dealer was Passport, who, incidentally was the same dealer who delivered our current X5. The vehicle is pretty loaded and had a list of $72K.

We used the same method of sending out bid requests to all the dealers in our area via e-mail. Most dealers are not at all internet savvy- and I continue to be amazed at the lack of knowledge most salesman possess. At any rate we went back and forth with several dealers who tacked on various (and bogus) fees making their discount less than it appeared before finally settling on Passport. One dealer (Arlington) first arrogantly stated that they didn't mark up the car- as if that were some sort of noble thing- then called repeatedly seeking our business but offering smaller discounts that we realized at Passport. My preferred dealer (who I swear by for service) is VOB. They had the most knowledgable and helpful salesperson but couldn't meet our price.
