Question about Labor Laws....

quick question for you all. i work for a large communications company
as a desktop admin. day in and day out, my customers are my coworkers.
i do not support anyone outside of our company. our company has a referral
program for employees to sell the products that we offer. basically, if an
employee refers/sells a product to a customer, that employee gets earns points
that can be used towards merchandise, trips, gift certificates, etc. up until
wednesday, participating in this program has been voluntary. this wednesday,
we were told that, as part of our end-of-year review, sold referrals are going
to factor in determining our yearly incentive. basically, we have to make 5
sales per year; else, we will receive an unsatisfactory mark on our review.

now, i realize 5 sold referrals isn't much, but i was not hired to do sales. plus,
being that i don't interact w/ outside customers, i would be required to make
these sales after hours; yet, i will not be getting paid during said time. in the
event that i am hurt while attempting to make these sales; who is liable?
would that be considered workman's comp.?

is this legal?
