How can I import a color image into the original BMW (solid black with white lines) splashscreen and still retain the color of the imported image using photoshop?

I am attempting to make a custom splashscreen with photoshop and using the original BMW splashscreen as the background. When I put the new color image into the splashscreen, it turns black and white. For those that has done the custom splashscreen, could you give me some pointers?

I am attempting to learn this, but I would not be shy to accept any help in putting the splashscreen together.
