I think that there is some confusion here!
On early X53.0Ds the aux heater is always fitted, but there is a bar on making it work from the tv screen.
This heater heats the interior NOT the engine.
In 2003 I had a fight with BMW GB, and they reprogrammed it to work fully without charge.
Later X5s do not have this "bar".
Incidentally, the ticking noise under the lh front is this heater, NOT a sticking relay.
The remote control is a sepatate issue.
Finally, this aux heater is not very effective, so I wouldn't bother too much if it dosn't work. Idling the engine for 5 mins before setting off has a much greater effect on comfort.
