It's not your shifter light that's draining your battery - the X5 is an electrical hog - you really want to get into the habit of turning everything off before turning off the ignition - another thing to check for is if you have the auxiliary venting coming on - also, in early models, the a/c final stage resistor keeps feeding juice to the a/c fan even when the ignition is off - the thing is, the X5 is really never completely "off", which makes it manditory to use the BMW charger if you are not using the X5 for more than a week
IMHO, it also sucks that there is no voltage gauge, (or oil pressure)
