What did work was repeatedly pressing the eject button for what appeared to be an eternity (several minutes). The CD then ejected and loading a different CD then successfully upgraded the software.

- after reading and pleading on several forums, that is exactly what I did when mine was stuck - the navicomp eventually got annoyed with me pressing the button and spat the CD out
I was on the verge of taking the Mk4 apart to manually extract the CD. A VERY scary moment but if you persevere it will come out eventually.
