You are probably correct about dropping the cell processor. According to the article it will play less PS2 titles than the previous version. That's a bad deal for cosumers for sure.
I only mentioned about hacking mostly because PS3 has a limited number of good games. Not because I needed your advice on how to upgrade HDD.
Do you work for Sony?
Ask anyone who purchased PS3 will have similar complain like mine.

My buddy is hooking me up with 360 and many titles for 1/2 the price. My former collegues sends me PC games, but unfortunatley I don't have much time to play.
