I think the $5 signup just ended on the 15th (my wife is p1ssed she didn't sign up for it since she drives up by Manchester every day).
If the battery on your Mass one is dead, you can stop by one of the MassPike service centers and they will replace it with a new transponder on the spot for free. I just had to do that with my FastLane one - took the blue line over to Eastie one morning and swapped it out. That was the most convenient one for me. I'm keeping both so I always have one in a car - most of my trips are to the south, so either one will work fine for me.
