1. Macs are more secure because they are underpinned by Unix.

2. Macs are more secure as you state because they are smaller targets.

You don't need antivirus software on macs. The only thing, that would be doing is preventing viruses from spreading onto more PC's. (Your mac would read an already infected file just fine and the virus would have no effect, but say if you sent it to a PC, the file could still effect the PC causing it to catch the virus...)
