To place a shortcut in the dock locate the application in the hard drive. (not your home folder) From the application folder you locate the firefox planet icon and drag it to the dock. What you get is an automatic icon on the dock and the application remains in the application folder. But just to make sure send me a picture of the part of the desktop in question.
Thank's Barry! I can't get rid of the square Firefox on the desktop, but I did figure out how to keep a one click button on the dock. After I opened FF, I went down to the icon on the dock, right mouse clicked > keep icon on dock. That worked. I'll just ignore the square icon on the desktop. My only option when I right mouse click on it is "eject FF", when I do that it removes the program.
