I personally am the administrator of the 2,3 or four computers on my network. In all honesty it just isn't all that difficult to solve getting a printer online. I will admit I'm not a windows kinda guy but I can't believe this is that difficult.

I'm not trying to argue with you here.... but x5Jay states "As soon as I shut down my VPN connection, I can print fine."
In this scenario it seems that his printer is configured properly...... Once the VPN connection is made the VPN settings are disabling his access to his local network which then causes him to not be able to connect to the printer..... This is a common problem with more secure VPN installations. Trust me..... I wish there was a way around this because it's a real PITA for me as well. The only way to solve it is to get the admins to enable local network access..... and they are not going to do that....
