Actually, though my dad cares about the grass, he doesn't read the instructions on the fertilzer (or anything else for that matter ). So in the end, I end up doing it again just to make it right.

I don't think you wasted your time; the grass is quite resiliant. Now, it IS a waste if you put it down and it gets washed away in a rainstorm, but that's what weather.com is for. I think ideally, fertlizer usually is put down a day after you've mowed the lawn IIRC.

My neighbor and I always compare our lawns........his is usually better since he's retired and has the hours to spend cutting it perfectly. But occasionally, he'll cut it too short right before a hot dry spell and as a result it turns a bit brown and yellow in spots
