For those of you with compatible ZF transmissions, I found a guy in San Diego who will ship (OEM) ESSO LT71141 automatic transmission fluid for $10.34/liter (no minimums). BMW charges almost $25/liter for the same ESSO-branded fluid with their label on it so this is a pretty good deal. Shipping on a case of 12 liters is about $24.00. VW/Audi charges about $15/liter plus tax for similar fluid so even with shipping you can save a few bucks and save yourself the trip to a dealer.
To validate that you can use ESSO LT71141, carefully check the sticker on your transmission and note the model number. You can then compare your model number to ZF's oil guide (link below) to verify that this fluid will work for your transmission.
