I've actually never ridden on 20's, so I'm not sure about the ride. But as far as the numbers are concerned:
275/35-20's are 28.66" in diameter, and have a sidewall height of 110mm
285/45-19's are 29.10" and 128.25mm
By comparison, the stock sport package 255/55-18's are 29.04" and 140.25.
So it seems that the 19's have a significanly bigger cushion - that's why I've been leaning that way... (I've bent a few replica rims on my old 3-series when it was running 235/40-17's - which have only 94mm of sidewall height - so that's why I'm reluctant to buy into a very low aspect ratio on the X5)
I could be wrong about the 20's though - maybe they're durable enough for the potholed roads I find myself on all too often... and they do look awesome!
