Mari, just download a "free" copy of
NeoOffice. It has the ability to read and create documents, spreadsheets and presentations (powerpoint). I just downloaded it yesterday, and it works perfectly on my MacBook. If you decide later that you want more, wait until Office for Mac 2007 comes out later this year. It will be made for Intel based Macs, and you will be able to get it for ~$149 with the student discount.
