I think he probably got a front-drive A4 and hence, the CVT transmission. Yea, CVTs really do suck. However, I think the fact that it's a rental had a lot to do with the lousy overall experience, unless it had very few miles.
Only Mercedes has a 7-speed automatic. Check the Audi site if you're not sure.
