I bought a new 2002 X5. The nav monitor was very "dull". It simply needed an adjustment to the brightness. The only way then, was to ask the dealer to do this. On a subsequent (2005) model, this can be adjusted through the display (set) programme.
I would ask your dealer to increase the brightness before carrying on with anything else...
