iPhone fans in northern Wisconsin, northern Minnesota, northern Michigan, north suburban Topeka and parts of upstate New York rejoice: by the end of the year (regulators willing), you will be able to buy iPhones because Dobson Cellular One, a regional carrier in your area, was purchased by AT&T today.
AT&T will only sell iPhones in areas where they have native coverage. This purchase extends AT&T's native coverage in a number of rural areas where they're weak. Check out
Dobson's coverage map versus
AT&T's coverage map. They complement each other very nicely.
Dobson Cellular One subscribers won't be able to buy iPhones until their local brand switches over to AT&T. But at least there's now an end in sight.
