I interpret that as the car is not smooth (jerky, etc) as that doesn't sound like the engine, especially compared to the unbalanced V8. OK, that is a little harsh, it is a pretty smooth V8, but it is impossible for a V8 to be as smooth as a 6 or a 12.
If there was a hesitation in the throttle, lack of power, and jerky shifting I would suspect that this was a very low mileage vehicle, that hadn't learned your driving behaviour yet (throttle, and shifting have learning routines). Either that, or the vehicle had a mechanical problem.
There isn't that much difference between the 3.0 and the 4.8 if you are used to your 911; you may want to wait and see what the X6 is like with much more power than the current 4.8 (it is rumoured to be a twin turbo V8)
