I went to college in Buffalo NY, and up there many of the stores accept Canadian currency, and across the border in Canada most of the stores accepted American dollars. I would imagine this is rather common in most border areas. The only lousy thing was that they would give you a bad conversion rate (worse than the banks would). But if you were just going across the border for the evening (the drinking age there was 19), then you didn't always have a chance to go to the bank.
