Maybe he's just comfortable enough with you to look beyond the race thing. I'm a proud Black man and have close non Black friends that I joke around all the time even with race stuff. I think One will know if it's disrespectful based of tone of voice or the type of relationship you share. At the end I think we all have to be able to look beyond the ethics BS and just treat people for what they are. I would take as a positive he shared that joke with you.
