is there anyway i can mess up my software real bad?

i'm fairly good with technology, but i dont want to message up a $1,000 navigation computer just for software upgrades.

basically im asking, if i make a mistake will it be fixable?

ps. i think i have version 16 or 17 (i forget which) on an mkiii. i know i needed the key to do the upgrade. can i just jump from where im at to version 25?
