I think it is much like all the security at the airports. Its purpose is for show -- to make people feel more comfortable and safe, not to actually have an affect on crime. I was thinking much the same. Metal detectors and such might help keep some weapons out of the schools. Of course they wouldn't stop an AK47-toting kid from blasting his way in!
