I don't know anyone in the Chicago area and I've asked without getting any good recs from people I know... sorry.
Depending on the system you're working with, I don't think $1K is worth while.
A little more than half of that can be spent on getting a clean preamp output. Not much left for amps, speaks, etc.
I think that around $2-3K is the level that I think that an upgrade is really worthwhile.
