Well, it wasn't that far away from home, and I wasn't doing any trail riding. It was just around the various developments and it theoretically was walking distance. However, after walking about a mile, I realized that a completely flat inner tube wasn't going to be good. I do carry my wallet and cell with me at all times.
It's annoying how I can jump rocks and logs while mountain biking and never damage the bike, but riding around town is what kills the tires. I dunno what exactly punctured it, but it probably happened as I was biking on the street in front of a car wash...........
