Be thankful that it was only spit that can be easily cleaned. I was in London last month, and I saw a brand new Range Rover Sport 5.7 HSE that had "4x4 scum" keyed into the side of the drivers door. I have a feeling that the spit was likely an environmental message. Thats why it was only done to you and not the other non 4x4 Bimmers.
