Just curious. The article say's "Hilton trade-marked the phrase "that's hot" in 2004 while she was starring in the reality TV show "The Simple Life." Did she legally trademark it or not? Well I don't know but remember A catch phrase is an expression usually popularized through repeated use by a real person or fictional character. Today, catch phrases are increasingly seen as an important component of marketing and promoting a product or service. If indeed she did trademark the phrase then hallmark may have to pay.

To coin a phrase on the other hand is different. To coin a phrase doesn't really refer to a phrase coined by any specific person as it does to refer to a specific action. Coining a phrase means exactly what is says. Certain political, social, religious, or reformists groups and causes would promote their specific cause by placing a phrase or slogan on a coin that would often be handed to the general public. Under those circumstances anyone could use that phrase.
