Can anyone help?

My 2002 X5 3.0d Auto has developed a fault where after driving off about one mile down the road it goes into neutral. After this occurs you cannot select drive or reverse. If you then stop and wait about 10 seconds and restart the engine the car will then select gear and drive normally for about a mile and the process occurs all over again.
