That's what makes it pointless. If they indeed give those contributions as you say; then they give enormous campaign contributions to those making the spending decisions on one side then turn around and give enormous campaign contributions to those making the spending decisions on the other side. Conclusion? Pointless, stupid, and any other negative adjective you would like to attach to it.
