In a criminal case the jury has to be convinced of the defendant's guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
In a civil case the jury only has to be convinced by a preponderence of the evidence that the plaintiff should prevail.
Two very different burdens of proof, the criminal burden being much more difficult to prove.
