If you use my NavCoder software you can test if the nav is alive by interrogating it, and also read the boot mode, which shows what the nav unit is currently programmed for

It will show you if it has Land Rover or BMW software loaded, and if the software is mono or colour

My NavCoder software will also let you change the boot mode to BMW Colour or BMW Mono, but I have yet to test it on a land rover Mk3 - I may be able to test next week
